On October 4, space and astronomy enthusiasts start celebrating World Space Week. In today’s article, we’ll talk about this exciting event and give information on the discounts that we’ve prepared on this occasion.
A brief history of the event
World Space Week is an international holiday that is held annually from October 4 to October 10. It celebrates the contribution of space science to the development of our civilization and improvement of our life. Its purpose is to educate people around the world about space, popularize astronomy, and other space-related subjects.
The holiday was created during the session of the UN General Assembly in 1999. The dates of World Space Week were chosen to commemorate two important events: the launch of the first human-made Earth satellite — USSR’s Sputnik 1 — on October 4, 1957, and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967.
How is World Space Week celebrated?
Every year, a particular theme for World Space Week is chosen. For instance, in 2002, it was “Space and Daily Life” and in 2019 — “The Moon: Gateway to the Stars”. The chosen theme then becomes the source of inspiration for all sorts of activities: exhibitions, lectures, film festivals, concerts, etc. For example, in 2017, the Mexican Space Agency arranged a Symphonic Space Concert and the Bangladesh Astronomical Society organized water rocket launches and space art debate. There are no strict rules on how to celebrate World Space Week — any space-related public activity counts.
World Space Week 2020
This year’s World Space Week is devoted to satellite technology — its theme is “Satellites Improve Life”. Event organizers will talk about the importance of artificial satellites in such spheres as communication, transportation, and weather forecasting. With Elon Musk creating a network of Internet-providing satellites and China building an 80-satellite communications constellation, it’s definitely an up-to-date topic.
We’d like to encourage you to participate in this wonderful event and get more involved in astronomy. That’s why we’re offering discounts up to 70% on two of our apps: Star Walk 2 and Solar Walk 2! With Star Walk 2, you can easily identify stars, planets, satellites, and other space objects in the sky above you. Solar Walk 2 is an interactive encyclopedia of the Solar System with 3D models of celestial bodies that will boost your knowledge about astronomy. Our special offer will end on October 10, so don’t hesitate too long!
Note that the paid and free versions of Star Walk 2 have the same content, but the latter is ad-supported.
In our opinion, simply going outside and looking up at the night sky filled with myriads of stars is a very appropriate way to celebrate World Space Week. So get out there and contemplate the amazing world above your head! Happy stargazing!
